Livio Castiglioni

Livio Castiglioni is an architect and designer born in Milan in 1911. He graduated in 1936 from the Faculty of Architecture at the Milan Polytechnic, in 1938 with his brothers he began various activities in the field of architecture. Later he became interested in electronics and lighting, becoming design consultant for Phonola from 1940 to 1960 and then for Brionvega. His interest in design turned into a series of experiments and studies put into practice in the setting up of multiple exhibitions, in which Castiglioni deals on a technical level with lights and sounds. In 1956, together with his brothers, he founded ADI, the Italian Association for Industrial Design, an important institution that awards the Golden Compass award.In his life he was mainly involved in lighting design and is known the world over for his Boalum lamp, made in 1971 for Artemide, together with the architect and designer Gianfranco Frattini. Livio Castiglioni died in Lierna in 1979.
